You may be wondering what a premarital exam is. These exams are scheduled for women who wait until marriage to have sex. Premarital exams can also be referred to as premarital physicals as well.
A premarital exam is very similar to a woman’s first exam or annual exam. Here are some things to expect during the appointment.
Screenings to expect at these exams are:
- cervical cancer screening (also known as a pap smear)
- breast cancer screening (mammogram)
- colon cancer screening (colonoscopy)
- testing for diabetes and high cholesterol
Other things to talk about during this exam are:
- brief health history
- birth control options (mentioned above)
- preconception counseling
- sexual problems or concerns
Premarital exams can be whatever the patient needs them to be and is used as the foundation to make a connection with your gynecologist and to establish an open healthy relationship going forward for years to come.
The term premarital exam is a unique term in Utah, but common to the women who live in the state. Although this exam may seem unusual to those outside of Utah, they are actually quite common here in the Wasatch Valley and in Idaho as well.
If issues occur after you start to become sexually active please schedule an appointment with your physician. Problems or even pain during intercourse are common problems and usually can be easily identified. Sometimes further treatments are necessary or these problems can be easily fixed.
